Are the 7 missing books of the Protestant Bible quoted in the New Testament?

Introduction

Hey folks,

Taking a little break from Pastor Greg Smith and offering you something, in this newsletter, that you can use as a reference for many years to come. As most, if not all, of you know, there is a 7 book difference between the Catholic bible and the Protestant bible. 7 books of the Old Testament that Catholics believe are the inerrant Word of God, and that Protestants do not. If you've ever engaged in discussion about these books with a Protestant, you will have probably heard them say something along these lines, "One way we know those books aren't Scripture is that they are never quoted in the New Testament." They have to come up with criteria like that, as flawed as it might be, because they have no authority they can point to which infallibly declares which books are, or are not, the inerrant Word of God.

Well, forget for a moment that that particular criterion could also be applied to several books of the Old Testament that they do accept as scripture (which, in and of itself, makes their argument a non-starter), the fact of the matter is, that there are a number of places in the New Testament where passages from these 7 books are obviously being referred to or are actually prophesies of things to happen in the New Testament. Sometimes the reference is pretty directl sometimes indirect.

For example:

1) Matt 4:4 - "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." Wisdom 16:26 - "...so that your sons, whom you loved, O Lord, might learn that it is not the production of crops that feeds man, but that your word preserves those who trust in you."

2) Matt 4:15 - "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles..." 1 Maccabees 5:15, "...they said that against them had gathered together men of Ptolemais and Tyre and Sidon, and all Galilee of the Gentiles."

3) Matt 27:39-43 - "And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying, 'You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross...He saved others; he cannot save himself...He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" Wisdom 2:13, 17-20 - "He professes to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord...and boasts that God is his father. Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen at the end of his life; for if the righteous man is God's son, he will help him, and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries. Let us test him with insult and toruture that we may find out how gentle he is, and make trial of his forbearance. Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for, according to what he wasy, he wil be protected."

Below is a list of a few hundred passages from the New Testament that find parallels in passages of the 7 books Catholics have in their bible that Protestants do not have. Again, some are pretty direct parallels, others a bit more indirect. They are arranged first by the order they appear in the New Testament, and then by the order they appear in the 7 Old Testament books. Go through them a few at a time. I think you will be surprised. For example, did you know the Golden Rule is found in one of those 7 books (see if you can find it)?

I can't remember where I got this list from, and I haven't been through every single one of them, but I've checked out a good number of them. Again, just keep it on hand as a reference, and should you ever get into a discussion about the 7 books not being quoted, or referred to, in the New Testament, you can pull out the list and go, "Oh, yeah?"
